They are out to get you.

 In case you have not noticed, the US is in a state of undeclared civil war. The current government has become aware that the advent of robotics, AI, and 3D printing has changed the fundamentals of the economy. It used to be that mass production, and mass consumption was the best way to produce a surplus, but more and more this is becoming unnecessary to the elite. Instead of raising the living standards of all, in order to have the workers all employed, they can mass produce automatically as required with only a few technicians, and an army of robots. And they can defend their empires with an army of robots too. 

So no need for vaccinations, no need for universal healthcare, no need for due process, or justice, no need for 99% of humanity. The warming planet and associated weather disruption will help to get rid of this excess of peasantry, along with some intractable wars and ethnic conflicts. So far, this plan is largely unopposed in any significant fashion, and people lament the uncaring government as though it is mere incompetence and not a suite of deliberate extermination policies.

It's not just the US, of course; the same economic facts apply worldwide. We are heading for a human population crash worldwide as droughts, floods, sea-level rise, pollution and land degradation reduce the food supply and the water supply, and the shelter supply. And the people in charge, those that have led us all to this catastrophe,  are keen to encourage us to kill each other before we think to blame them.

But we ain't to blame, we're only pawns in their game.
